Portuguese and Spanish navigator with the title of adelantado. He commanded an expedition that made the first known circumnavigation of the world. He opened the strait, later named after him, becoming the first European to travel by sea from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Died during the journey, not having time to personally complete it
