Interesting coin from the second own coin emission for Jersey in collectible condition struck in London. The coin has small mintage 173333 pcs only and it is a hard coin to locate. Uncommon style of face value: not just a 'half penny', but '1/26 of a shilling'. A. L. T. McCammon in his book "Currencies of the Anglo-Norman Isles" wrote about this denomination:

'These unusual denominations can be traced to back to the act of September 18, 1834. This act decreed that English money would be the sole legal tender in Jersey. At that time, 26 French livres were equal to one English pound. With 20 shillings to the pound and 20 sous to the livre, one shilling was worth 26 sous. Thus the Jersey penny or pièce de deux sous became 1/13th of a shilling, the Jersey half penny or sou 1/26th of a shilling, and the farthing or pièce de deux liards 1/52nd of a shilling.'



Unexpected mistake due to this uncommon denomination happened recently. The Standard catalog of Worlds coins calculated the mintage and got 160000 for 1870. But the £ 1000 which were given for three years mintage 1866, 1870 and 1871 equally, had to be divided into 1/26 of a shilling coins, not 1/24 as in the Great Britain. Thus the catalog got 160000 wrongly.
