Publikation zu August Sanders Typologie Antlitz der Zeit (1929). Beide
Bücher verbindet ein dokumentarisches Anliegen, hier aus subjektiver
Perspektive, dort mit objektivem Anspruch. Ein expressionistischer
Nachklang, der sich aus Lerskis Filmtätigkeit erklärt, führt bei seinen
Porträts zu dramatischer Stilisierung, während Sanders Aufnahmen eher
dem Streben nach prosaischer Sachlichkeit entsprechen. Letztlich stehen
die beiden fotografischen Positionen als Ausdruck ihrer Zeit jedoch
gleichberechtigt nebeneinander“ (R. Jaeger). – „Seine Bilder sollten
nicht illustrieren, wie jemand aussieht oder ist, sondern wie Heimar
Lerski ihn zeigen wollte, wie er mit seinen Arbeitsmaterialien – Licht,
Aufnahmewinkel und Perspektive – gestalten und dadurch ein ganz anderes
Ergebnis als Realität – erreichen konnte. Oberflächlich gesehen, könnte
man Lerski als einen Expressionisten bezeichnen, dessen Bilder Emotionen
zeigen und beschwören, die nur auf der Mattscheibe der Kamera und in
der Einbildungskraft des Mannes dahinter existieren“ (A. Krazna-Krausz
in Koetzle). – „The portraits he made for his first and most famous book
of photographs, Köpfe des Alltags (Everyday heads), are dramatically
stylized and far from naturalistic. Though his sitters are ordinary,
„unknown“ working men and women – many of them hired from local
employment agencies and identified in the book only as „washerwoman,“
„painter,“ or „bookkeeper“ Lerski gives each of them the fraught,
emblematic presence of characters caught up in the drama of their time.
(Though Köpfe des Alltags is not explicitly polemical, the unemployed
common man was a popular subject for artists all over the world when
these pictures were made in 1929 and ’30; the book’s back cover is
designed as a page torn from the want ads, with a rousing photographic
manifesto taking the place of the central text.) Lerski’s subjects (each
given the privacy of a right-hand page facing a blank spread) are seen
in extreme close-up – not heroicized, but rendered larger than life, not
unlike the faces that loom from the screen in films by Sergei
Eisenstein and Carl Dreyer. So it’s not surprising that the French-born,
Swiss raised photographer worked for fourteen years (1915–29) as a
movie cameraman in Berlin and, later, a documentary filmmaker. As Curt
Glaser notes in the book’s introduction, Lerski approached his models as
„raw material, not as personalities to be revealed but as flesh to be
transformed. „The modern photographer, like the painter, realizes that a
true portrait must express his own opinion of the sitter’s nature,“
Glaser writes“ (A. Roth). – Der meist fehlende Schutzumschlag sehr gut
