Er gilt als der „Vater der britischen Vogelkunde“. Er wurde 1694 in Stratford, Essex geboren. Ab 1716 bereiste das europäische Festland, studierte Naturgeschichte und wurde durch seine kolorierten Tierdarstellungen, insbesondere von Vögeln bekannt. Die Technik des Ätzens erlernte er bei Mark Catesby, einem englischen Naturhistoriker. Auf Empfehlung von Sir Hans Sloane wurde er 1733 Pedell (engl. Bedell) des Royal College of Physicians in London. Von 1743 bis 1751 veröffentlichte Edwards „A Natural History of Birds“. Drei ergänzende Bände mit den Titeln „Gleanings of Natural History“ wurden zwischen 1758 und 1764 veröffentlicht. Beide Werke enthalten zusammen mehr als 600 Radierungen. Linné nutzte Edwards oft erstmalige Beschreibungen als Grundlage für die wissenschaftliche Benennung zahlreicher Vogelarten. Eine deutsche Übersetzung der Natural History of Birds wurde wenige Jahre nach ihrem Erscheinen von den Nürnberger Illustrator Johann Michael Seligmann gedruckt. Weitere Werke von George Edwards sind „Essays of Natural History“ (1770) und „Elements of Fossilogy: or, An Arrangement of Fossils, Into Classes, Orders, Genera, and Species; With Their Characters.“ (1776). Edwards wurde 1750 von der Royal Society für A Natural History of Birds mit der Copleymedaille ausgezeichnet. Der Puffotter-Katzenhai Haploblepharus edwardsii wurde nach Edwards benannt, der diese Art zuerst beschrieben hatte. Um das Jahr 1764 herum zog sich Edwards nach Plaistow zurück, wo er 1773 starb. // George Edwards was an English naturalist and ornithologist. He is considered the "father of British ornithology". He was born in Stratford, Essex in 1694. From 1716 toured the European mainland, studied natural history and became known for its colored animal representations, especially of birds. He learned the technique of etching from Mark Catesby, an English natural historian. On the recommendation of Sir Hans Sloane he became Pedell (Bedell) of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1733. From 1743 to 1751 Edwards published "A Natural History of Birds". Three supplementary volumes entitled "Gleanings of Natural History" were published between 1758 and 1764. Both works together contain more than 600 etchings. Linnaeus often used Edwards' first descriptions as the basis for the scientific naming of numerous bird species. A German translation of the "Natural History of Birds" was printed a few years after its publication by the Nuremberg illustrator Johann Michael Seligmann. Other works by George Edwards include “Essays of Natural History” (1770) and “Elements of Fossilogy: or, An Arrangement of Fossils, Into Classes, Orders, Genera, and Species; With Their Characters. ”(1776). Edwards was awarded the Copley Medal by the Royal Society for A Natural History of Birds in 1750. The puff adder shark Haploblepharus edwardsii was named after Edwards, who first described this species. Around 1764 Edwards retired to Plaistow, where he died in 1773.
