alles, was Smith produzierte, unter dem Vorzeichen der
Veröffentlichung. Kein einziges Bild wurde aufgenommen oder ausgewählt,
ohne dass der Fotograf ein bestimmtes Buch oder Magazin im Kopf gehabt
hätte. Von seinen ersten Fotoreportagen für die Zeitschrift News-Week,
für die er ab 1937 arbeitete (kurz vor ihrer Umbenennung in Newsweek),
bis „Minamata“; (1972) – alle Bilder von Smith wurden narrativ in einen
strukturierten Rahmen eingebettet, auf eine fortlaufende Weise, die bis
dato für Pressefotografen keine Option gewesen war; dies gilt
gleichermaßen für seine gelungene Serie von Fotoessays für Life zwischen
1948 und 1954 sowie für das Essay über Pittsburgh und das endlose (und
unvollendete) autobiografische Fotografieprojekt „The Walk to Paradise

Smith produced was geared toward publication. Not a single image was
taken or selected without the photographer having a specific book or
magazine in mind. From his first photo reports for News-Week magazine,
for which he worked from 1937 (shortly before it was renamed Newsweek),
to “Minamata” (1972) – all of Smith’s images were narratively embedded
in a structured framework, in a continuous manner that had not been an
option for press photographers until then; This applies equally to his
successful series of photo essays for Life between 1948 and 1954, as
well as to the essay on Pittsburgh and the endless (and unfinished)
autobiographical photography project “The Walk to Paradise Garden.”
