Life
Eduard Hildebrandt, the brother of Fritz Hildebrandt, received his first artistic instruction from his father. At the age of twenty, Hildebrandt moved to Berlin in 1837 and found lodgings in various painters' studios. Already in the following year Hildebrandt undertook a study trip to the island of Rügen and discovered for himself the landscape of the German Baltic Sea coast as a subject. After his return he got a job in the studio of the naval painter Wilhelm Krause. In 1839 Hildebrandt undertook a study trip through England and Scotland, again focusing on the coast.
On the recommendation of Wilhelm Krause, Hildebrandt was able to go to Paris in 1841 to become a pupil of the painter Eugène Isabey. Already in 1843 he was allowed to participate with a small genre image at the exhibition of the Paris Salon; it was awarded a gold medal. At the end of the same year, Hildebrandt returned to Berlin. On the recommendation of Alexander von Humboldt, the Prussian King Frederick William IV assisted Hildebrandt with a considerable amount, so that in 1844 he was able to undertake a long journey to Brazil and North America.
